Thrax was an unknown pathogen looking to be recognized by the medical community. For a virus "street cred" is basically being discovered as a deadly illness. It is speculated that Thrax is a new variant of Scarlet Fever, or perhaps even designed.

Italy is fucked due to other factors. I'm not entirely sure what's going on over there, but smoking, vaccinations, and elderly population are all factors here. COVID-19 is highly infectious, and appears to be resistant most climates. Sure they can throw a high number out on the news, but when you factor in the number of recovered and the local population number, the math shows low mortality. The real issue is spreading.

Depending on the strain, anywhere from 'cold' to 'Need a new lung'. The problem is the virus drives you're immune system into overdrive so it performs the cell equivalent to carpet bombing, destroying healthy and infected cells alike. It basically melts the inside of your lungs which sucks.
