They are trying to find a reason why an ordinary human girl would be a regular in a show about mutant ninjas fighting aliens and robots. In the first show she was just a reporter and she hung out with them because a) she was reporting on them and events around them b) she was their friend. Since she was around them for these reasons she regularly got kidnapped, bound and gagged and had to be rescued by them. I like this basic formula for April's involvement with the turtles. But damsels in distress are politically incorrect now so they decided they have to make her an ass-kicking riot grrrl. She did still get kidnapped occasionally though.

seriously though, if they tried the reporter angle again they could have her doing serious investigations and stuff and also occasionally just hanging out as their friend. they don't need to make her a superhero, the whole point of her is she's a normal human girl.

Women are so used to and want the idea of being the soul damsel that they forget that damsel is both gender neutral and damsels used to traditionally be the male children of nobles and heirs.

There was some worth in rescuing those damsels.
Just rescuing a random woman in a bad situation? It's not only a bad thing to consider it, it's seen as ultimately wrong to do so in modern climate. And for girls to ask for help from peers rather then big government ensures that there is no help or connections with others in a real way.

There's a much bigger difference between a cop and a psychic ninja than between a reporter and a cop. Especially if that reporter isn't retarded and has a concealed carry permit. Elisa got to be important in Gargoyles but I'm pretty sure the only person who ever got shot with her gun and was actually hurt by it was her. She was never ever put on a level with the gargoyles themselves or the shit that they dealt with.

I would have no problem with a female ninja turtle if that concept hadn't been so thoroughly poisoned by Next Mutation. But you can't take a monster-heroes cartoon like Ninja Turtles or Street Sharks or Biker Mice from Mars and make a human looking character as cool as them. It ruins the whole appeal.

One of the turtles biggest enemies is Shredder, who's a human, and then one of their allies is Casey Jones, also a human.
There's no reason April can't be allowed to fight.

So someone thought that it could be shortened in a way that would make it gender neutral then went on a shpiel.
However the entire idea behind it is true and hero rescuing damsel in distress has always been popular in stories while in reality mercs rescuing kidnapped/in danger children of nobles was the norm.

The stories that were created of men risking life and limb were both tales to teach young boys to teach young girls to act in bad situations AND as shlick material for women and power fantasy stuff for men.

April doesn't need to be a super duper ninja.
Her being able to handle herself in certain situations because of experience and some personal training yes.
Her being all kungfu bitch with magic powers is fucking stupid and ruins not only the dynamic but makes everyone wonder why she didn't try in the first place. It makes her look bad as a character.

There are already strong female fighters in the series, and they are oft pushed to the side in spite of their skill as fighters.

I'm thinking, like, she investigates a dummy corporation secretly run by Shredder, or a factory secretly producing mutagen. If she gets caught by security maybe she can use some of the moves Splinter showed her. She shouldn't be successfully fighting mutants, aliens and robots. On the rare occasion she does have to fight such creatures, she would lose and those would be your occasional damsel in distress episodes.

Her whole purpose is to be a normal human to act as a link for the turtles between their mutant world and the human world. It muddies the waters when she is just as capable of fighting as the Turtles. Why even have the Turtles as heroes if a normal human girl is just as capable?

It's kind of a problem with a lot of superhero/superpower settings. People want the random normal side characters to eventually have powers and join in the fights too. and it comes off as weird or unnecessary most of the time.

Did Rise April ever get that glowing magic bat that the toy and the promo pics had? I don't think I ever saw it in an episode.

I could also see her getting obsessed with the foot clan and trying to investigate them and her boss thinking it's a conspiracy theory and she's going crazy. Then she ends up going after some influential businessman she thinks in involved with the foot clan or talking about mutants before they are public knowledge and embarrassing herself and gets fired by the network. After that she investigates on her own. Maybe starts a conspiracy blog/vlog. And her investigations lead her to the turtles.

It was frigging weird in Arrow how every friend or girlfriend or chauffeur or sister or hacker had to become a superhero eventually, I had to stop watching. Same with Flash. Another example is the Sony Spider-man video game where they had to make Mary Jane a reporter to be part of the action even though it doesn't fit her. Heroes should also have a human civilian life where they have social interactions with human friends and family and lovers, they don't need to let the cape stuff infect the whole thing. In the turtles case they aren't human but they should also have normal interests and normal friends and a normal (for them) sewer life when they aren't kicking ass. I like action but that shouldn't be all there is to a show.

Shredder is the bad guy that's entirely different. The appeal of the monster hero genre is outsiders being the hero. So unless the next TMNT adaptation goes even weirder, that's probably not a consideration. Casey is at his best when he's portrayed as a slightly unstable idiot with a bag of sticks. He should never be on a level with the turtles.

Don't forget she's an alien too.
