She has a high enough persuasion modifier that rolling 20 lets her pass the DC.

20 might not be a crit but it's still "the best result you could possibly roll", and most halfway-competent dungeon masters won't let you roll if even a 20 is failure (unless they're sadists who are letting you roll because they want to see how *hard* you fail).

That's never a good way of doing it, you have the conversation for fun, the chance of success should be done to how good your character is at diplomacy. I sometimes mid max and drop the charisma stat as low as it can go for combat focused characters, don't want to just make the stat completely obsolete.
