They get pampered their whole lives (even if one of them is sacrificed at adulthood) while the lizards live in poor conditions while waiting on them hand and foot. Sounds like he's choosing to focus on the part of the story that saw salt lizard playing the humans against each other and chomping people in half. Salty did flee in the end, but she was not meek and mild on her way out.

That strikes me as a weakness of the Two Toes' religion. Sure, they know for a fact their gods are real, but that carries consequences. What happens when the gods you worship can be defeated, can be beaten, can be wounded and crippled?

It's a very human (lol) reaction. The old have seen the good times and the bad and now exactly how shit things are and could be. The young are inexperienced and full of vigor and certain that this time things will be different. Eager to commit any crime in the name of a greater good. And generally blind to how much they may regret their decisions.

On the other hand, it's hard to be young and see someone say you just need to put up with this forever. It can look like the old are simply blind, given up, set in their ways. Surely things can be better. Surely you just need to try hard enough. But sometimes they can't, not the way you want them to be. Sometimes all you've got is swallowing your pride and keeping what little you have. It's not necessarily better than nothing, but there's no coming back from nothing.

Someday things can be better for the Inak, but it's not gonna be today. And it probably won't be tomorrow.

Notice how every antagonistic two-toe has has a sharp snout? First it was Cutter, just a coincidence, then the assassins of Sonorie's sister, and now these no good punks with axes to grind. The more rounded snouts usually belong to nicer, more protecting inaks.
