Outside extra diversity points, nothing really. You could replace Shep with Ronaldo or Buck and the story would still play out the same.

They could have easily had her dating Buck with the explanation that they got closer while in the band (though I get the vibe Buck might be younger), but I think they were going for the idea that these big changes are happening while Steven isn't around to such a degree that Sadie got together with somebody Steven didn't even know.

I still think Shep's design is an eyesore and they clearly made them have no personality flaws as an attempt to not be offensive, which feels weird for SU.
