The entire reason she was hurt that Derick didn't care that she cheated was because it proved that he absolutely zero romantic interest in her. Iv seen people on here say that Derick deserves to be happy too, but if that happiness comes at the expense of his families well being then how can his actions be justified. It's the perspective of the comic that leads people to empathize with him. Every conflict has stemmed from adultery or judgement of sexual deviancy. The whole reason Alfie ran off was because of her mothers judgement.
So the question the comic poses is the sexual deviancy and hedonism to blame or is it the judgement of those practices. This is Incases bread and butter. And I can only assume it will end with the confirmation deviancy is in the right.

He also stayed around because he figured Alfie would be back sooner rather than later. The only thing Alfie has done better than her mom is travel farther and that's only because Vera was already pregnant. He's taken the father role in the Prodigal Son.
