When they introduced Kyle Rayner as THE Green Lantern, one of the plans was to eventually reveal that Kyle's father was actually Hal Jordan. That's why Kyle's father was out of the picture and why Ganthet specifically chose him to pass the last Power Ring. It'd be one of those cases where Hal fooled around in the past and bounced before learning that he left the girl pregnant.
They eventually gave up on this idea feeling that it'd feel too much like Star Wars with Luke and Vader.
