Within the context of the episode the whole episode was one of the numerous "Will they or won't they" drama episodes centered around whether or not Jon would make up with Shayera. To that effect it worked fine. People's issues at the time weren't really that they 'cucked' Hawkman (half of his relationship with Hawkgirl in comics has been him angsting over how her current incarnation doesn't remember him and has relationships with other men), but rather that they made him look like a psychotic, violent ex boyfriend in the attempt, which is why WB execs made the writers change the character's name.

Fuck no. Hawkman and Hawkgirl have always been a romantic couple, that's how they started off. They wanted to use Hawkgirl instead of Hawkman and didn't know what to do with her since they weren't using Hawkman's long established mythos. So they decided to fuck over Carter Hall and his one big relationship that literally defined most of his career.

This. They ruined Hawkman and all I want to see is the couple back together in both the comics and in some animated form. They worked well in all the old Golden Age and Silver Age stuff.
