I saw "Fantabulous" and knew the movie was for me.

I saw four Dudebros go into Hot Topic yesterday when i was at the mall and they wiped out the BOP blankets that were on display and it kind of confused me. They were all talking about how hot Margot Robbie was and they were buying the blankets specifically for that reason. Then later I saw a woman buying Harley shit at Gamestop and THEN I saw people buying Harley shit at Barnes and Noble and just everywhere I went I saw Harley merchandise, and people were either buying it or looking at it with the intent to buy.

It just made me pause for a minute and ask: If Harley herself is still popular, and people aren't soured on movie Harley as a concept why the fuck did this movie bomb? I get why Yas Forums, or cultural warriors hate it but the general public doesn't normally care about this shit so if they're still stoked on Harley why did it bomb? It was well reviewed, it was released with no real competition. What actually happened with this movie?

The plot sucks but there’s plenty of good action scenes. Apparently they got the guy who did the John Wick action scenes on board. Not that good action can carry a bad film but it was nice
Black Mask? He didn’t come across as gay or woman hatey at all. Unless you interpret that one scene where he forces some female guest in his club to stand up on a table and dance while crying and her male friend is forced to cut off her dress with a knife, as woman hatey. That was kinda weird. Is that what women want? When click bait articles praised the film for being “less male gaze-y” (which doesn’t mean what they think it means) this is not what I expected. And the way he dies is dumb and anticlimactic.
People love SS Harley? That film was basically just a bad zombie apocalypse movie. But more importantly Harley in that film defines herself in how much she loves Joker, and also Joker is shown to care about her a great deal. Then we jump into BoP Harley and she suddenly hates everything about him and we’re told how much of a cunt he was without anything actually shown or any details. At the end of SS he broke her out of prison. When did he become the bad guy?

Timing could've been an issue, too. It might not be an outright rejection so much as BoP debuted on a month that people traditionally don't go to watch movies outside of Valentine's Day. They might've been banking on more people going to watch it on the 4-day holiday, but then Sonic took the attention from every movie that weekend.

I can't speak for the normalfags, but most of the girls who pull Harley at my LCS(and it's only girls at this point) weren't excited for this movie. Sure they still like the character, but they know consistency depends on the writers over the actor. Most common complaints were that it should have been a Gotham City Sirens movie, that none of the characters were recognizable as their comic counterparts(this came from ones who never read Birds of Prey too, it still rubs them the wrong way which was cool to find out), and about half of them just didn't like Suicide Squad.

As bad as Suicide Squad was, that movie managed to tap in that ever elusive market that every movie head-guy wants: the actual large as fuck minority crowd involving black people, Latin people, thirsty women, and pasty ass dudes that wish they were either black or Latin. They loved the trashy look of everything, the gangsta stylized characters, whatever little dynamic that mess managed to pull between the characters, the few scenes that work and even some that don't, and yes even Leto's Joker. It was a confusing Ayer in da hood movie with comic strapping and some acid thrown in.

These group of people LOVE this movie, and i doubt very much that they will love Gunn's sequel the same way they didn't loved this sorry woke mess that failed on every level.

Maybe if they do a Batman live action movie in the art-deco pho-1930s/1920's like the BTAS series and have Harley and Joker together, it might work.

Harley just hasn't had a good live action adaptation yet to warrant her current iteration getting a movie.
