It has nothing to do with self-inserting, I just want Clyde to actually have something other than spazzing out like an idiot while everyone proceeds to ignore him. It's a joke they ran to the ground after the first few episodes.
Him having an obvious crush on an oblivious airhead would at least be somewhat interesting. They could play it off like Amy from Sonic Boom; being able to keep his composure around Leni while having the occasional thing that shows that he's still a spaz, but is desperately trying to hide it.
