Pixar's chained to it's past. Thinking it has to tell regular stories but in a fantastical setting. I don't think it's the writers fault. It's a commonly talked about thing that every executive thinks there's this perfect recipe that can be discovered. They don't want to take risks. They just want a homogeneous product that can be made on a factory line with little input.

Nothing about this movie seems new or interesting. We've seen Tom Holland and Chris Pratt a million times, especially in the types of roles they're playing. The story doesn't seem very engaging. The setting is boring.

I'd love a suburban fantasy, but this ain't it.

I felt like they really had to push the marketing for this movie out of worry it would bomb, I mean I was seeing a fucking furniture commercial for it.

It's this character that made me realize how fucking hideous the designs are. I didn't like flannel boy as it was but I fucking hate the style for this character. Yea it was a gay trans or whatever lgbt thing people were talking about a few days ago but fuck I hate that design it's hideous.

Anyone else thinks the movie looks like it was made by Dreamworks? It screams "generic pop culture" on every screenshot and trailer.

People who aren’t DnD nerds hate gross ugly elf/troll/etc. fantasy creature designs in CGI that are almost human but not quite.
If it weren’t for having a base level of competency by virtue of being Pixar it’d be in the same category as Delgo, Strange Magic, or Mars Needs Moms as far as totally unappealing shit no one on earth wants to watch

Pretty easily, people have been calling out dnd-style fantasy as generic and uninspired for a long time now. There's definitely an angle you need to make it interesting and pixar banked far too hard on "but it's modern day!" to intrigue, but even that's nothing new. They might as well have made a Discworld film.

You can tell pixar realised at some point that they didn't have anything amazing on their hands and where trying to play up the "comfy road trip" angle.
