They might actually go whole hog on the black people and focus on America. That other Disney movie is designed specifically for China so that can recoup their losses
If Onward is any indication, this one will do just as bad.
I realized Pixar lost his touch since monster academy (even if the movie was visually beautiful)
but i realized pixar was truly dead when they fucked up toy story 4 by firing john lasseter and rewriting the original script
Why'd he get to keep the hat and glasses after he died?
Considering most China movies still suck, probably
The Black MC is pretty much a death knell for foreign markets (and don't China have a taboo against spirits)
It’s going to be praised to the high heavens by critics and win BAF at the Oscars, then it’ll be forgotten afterwards.
>What if black people had feelings?
>and don't China have a taboo against spirits
It's a loophole used by the censor boards to keep the markets open for local movies. The people themselves know it's a load of bullshit and it's selective as all hell since local films can feature spooky shit all the time and get away with it.
>monster academy
Are you from the UK or something? Who the hell calls it that?
It doesn't look great, the whole spirit world/afterlife/whatever looks 100 times less interesting than the animated real world.
its the french name sorry :
what was the original script?
Raya isn't Chinese based though, it's a pan-South Asian fantasy world blending Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Indonesia into one big Avatar knockoff.
>it's a "we'll only have a black protagonist if he spends most of the time not black" film
Depressing, but true.
Oh, my bad. That’s an understandable mistake.
>Will China watch it?
No, because they'll be dead
>Are you from the UK or something?
If anything it would be "Monsters College" in the US.
So much for black representation in the industry.
What's with pixar having such hideous character designs? At least they could've given the protagonist attractive facial proportions.
You ever think about how ironic it is that a bunch of companies that push for imagination, creativity, inclusiveness, and treating people kindly bend over backwards and limit themselves creatively to meet the demands of a brutal totalitarian state that doesn't give a fuck about inclusiveness and cracks down on dissent with an iron fist, just because they have a large enough population that even relatively low ticket prices still mean a big profit?
So it’s Moana but SEAsian instead of Polynesian
The trailer for Soul reminded me a lot to Spies In Disguise: they looked cool up until the talking animals/things showed up and reminded me it was going to be kiddieshit.
I was actually shocked when the man fell down a sewer hole and his fucking soul came dropping out. I thought it was just a gag, not him actually dying.
Had the same problem with Princess and the Frog.
>hey an interesting setting
>lol no it's talking animal shit now
Pretty sure they call it that in Mexican speaking countries.
Reminds me of that new movie Connected, could have been a cute road trip movie but than LOL ROBOT INVASION!
Why can't we just have an animated movie about a black person, everyone seemed way more excited for all three of these movies before the bird/ghost/frog reveal moment. I remember Princess and the Frog had people thinking that the frog part would only be a minor aspect of the film and not nearly as long as it was, and ultimately liking the human segments more than the frog segments. It's like the public actually just wants an animated movie like that, but studios are afraid to commit.
>Making sure the black character doesn't stay black so the general (white) audience doesn't feel alienated
This is "Spies in Disguise" and "Princess and the Frog" all over again.
Here’s hoping Spider-Verse’s success gets executives to be more open to having black leads actually star in their animated films.
I find it very pathetic that artists and studios cannot at least try to commit to this kind of thing.
The artists and writers especially, there's nothing worse than an artist who preaches bullshit they don't practice.
Even worse is the situations where they're trying to teach a message, but you can just tell they don't believe it and won't follow it.
I just have no idea how this could possibly be anything other than more-or-less just Inside Out, again
>Will China watch it ?
Aren’t they busy with a virus a outbreak
Inside Out with a dash of Coco
I think it would do well in China but so much of the country is closed because of the virus. Even if theaters were open I doubt people would want to spend any significant amount of time in a crowded public place like a theater.
Of course China will watch it, the majority of the movie has characters that are the color of the rainbow. The Chinese will only have to deal with looking at shit skins for the first five minutes until he dies.
>Will China watch it?
Assuming the Coronavirus outbreak stops by then, maybe.
They definitely won't like the black guy but if Princess and the Frog and Spies in Disguise are any indication, he'll only be in it for like 6 minutes.
Was this even animated by pixar?
It looks like dreamworks from 15 years ago.
>finally make a black mc in your pixar movies
>kill his ass within five minutes so you can make him a blue ghost for the whole movie
>animation is childish
>children like cartoons
>animation has to have cartoony designs
I'm sorry but honestly, this movie looks boring as fuck. What is it even about? Is the majority of the movie gonna be only about those weird soul orb things? Nothing about this movie seems appealing or fun to watch at all. Who is even the target audience for this? Can't imagine kids having fun seeing this movie.
>What is it even about?
The plot of Soul so far according to a user Pixar employee
boards.fireden.net
>The story is still in flux but i can tell you for sure the main character is a groid who dies and goes in limbo and tries to get back to his body and learns his purpose in life throughout the story
>Its Coco / Book of Life but with jazz instead of mexican music. And those quirky Pete Doctor act 2 characters.
Basically it's about the opposite of an afterlife. Instead of it being about the souls of people who have died, it's about the souls of people who are yet to be born into the world. That's what the whole "what are you going to do with your life?" tagline is referring to.
God, why do western animators need to make every normal human look so unbearably ugly, but everything non-human insufferably bland but ALSO ugly?
>Never trust a black man named Mort.
Why do weebs need to categorize a single studio/piece of media as the default for a regions "style"
Don't act like anime doesn't have soulless shit copied and pasted either. No pic isn't related, but it's not the standard either.
>Spider-Verse’s success
I fucking love Spider-Verse more than anyone has ever loved anything, and while I will admit it was hugely successful and at the very least managed to get a really dedicated and nice enough following, it's total earnings are pretty standard and nothing special for an animated movie if I recall.
Just to put it into the depressing perspective, the new animated Grinch movie, Boss Baby, and even Rio 2 made more than it, with all but Rio 2 making almost double. Sing did make double the money it did, and Minions broke one billion.
The only message being sent to executives is cheap, no risk cookie cutter animated movies will be the safe bet every single time and Spiderverse was probably a fluke.
Is this just the result of younger animators?
This does not bode well for Pixar's future.
Why bother making black Coco? Coco was fine. Coco was good. If you didn't feel anything during that last 'Remember Me' refrain, you were a goddamned ginger.
This movie doesn't need to exist. Not because it's about blacks, but because it isn't doing anything original.
romantic comedy with bo peep and woody. more of an epilogue to the trilogy than a traditional sequel
Spider-Verse bombed user
China bucks.
Then why is it getting a sequel
Fuck, she was my favorite Bible Black character.
kek.
>Coco was fine. Coco was good.
Got an Oscar so it doesn't matter
I was so fucking mad the moment that little ghost showed up on screen.
literally soulless
