>Steven goes to homeworld to prevent everyone from being kidnapped
>Returns safely and everyone is happy he's back, except Connie
>For no reason, Connie is mad that they...didn't all get kidnapped? Basically she selfishly wanted to put her training to use. Still doesn't make sense how she thought she was going to help him, or even why she's mad at Steven
>Proceeds to be a cunt for the next like, 6 episodes and ignores Steven.
>Meanwhile Steven doesn't help Lars escape from homeworld and in the meantime fucks around with shitty people like Mayor Dewey
I'm just rewatching SU as I dropped it after that one hiatus before they did before the movie. I completely forgot how Connie turned into a huge bitch and Steven neglected Lars even though he has powers and could easily have helped him escape homeworld. Why is the writing so bad in this mini-arc of post-homeworld?
Steven goes to homeworld to prevent everyone from being kidnapped
She never cared for him and was upset because she wants "adventure" in her life which was avoided in this situation. She wants to date some hero to feel like one herself
She's literally Sam from Danny Phantom and I'm so happy this bitch will be out of Steven's life soon
Wait, so she only gets worse? Fuck dude, I hate her so much NOW. I thought she was just "ok" up until this point. But her being mad is so fucking dumb. Steven saved everyone and her response is, "BUT YOU DIDN'T LET ME HELP YOU DO IIITTTTTT", even though it wouldn't have helped at all if she came along. She fucking sucks
Connie's mad because Steven gave up so easily, they always said they would tackle these problems together
>No matter what comes, we do this together!
But here he just gives up. You can sort of see where she's coming from even if it's irrational considering it wasn't a situation they could have won.
That said I agree this was a particularly bad storyline. I think they were trying to recapture the Sardonyx arc but failed. I don't even think this is peak of Worst Connie a few episodes later she does something colossally stupid to say the least.
>"Hey we're in Homeworld in front of ALL these royal gems, in front of the most powerful beings in the Universe, and in an ice-thin event after thousands of years of grief and high tension..."
>"STEVEN LET'S FUSE AND DANCE!"
Did the writers just decide to have her be lobotomized for that one episode or what the FUCK.
>peak of Worst Connie a few episodes later she does something colossally stupid to say the least.
Hmmm, is that something to do with the Kevin Party episode? I vaguely remember that episode pissing me off a lot. Like, Steven tries to act cool or something and she thinks hes a douche. Really bad writing. But I can't remember
>That said I agree this was a particularly bad storyline. I think they were trying to recapture the Sardonyx arc but failed
Why would they try to replicate one of the worst arcs in the series?
It seems like a lot of characters get irrationally mad at things in this series. At least that arc, Garnet's anger was justified as Pearl was just wasting their time. Connie being mad is irrational as fuck. And the fact she just DROPS steven, so suddenly. She acts like he fucked another girl and got a new best friend. It's such a stretch that she's angry. Literally no other character is mad that he turned himself in. They had no chance of stopping Aquamarine
I really hope in ten years someone buys the IP and does a full reboot. The core concept of this show is probably the best original property of the 2010s. The execution is just a lame, cheap, directionless kid's show.
>I can't exactly shatter myself.
>No, I am your father.
Five words that defined the entire series. They knew what they were doing. You could tell Rebecca Sugar wanted this show to be a masterpiece of serialized American animation but what we got was CalArts rushed out crap.
I agree for the most part. There was a lot of potential for SU to be one of the greatest cartoons of all time, but I feel like it was held back by the fact it WAS a kid's show. Now, I'm not saying I want to it to be an adult show, with blood and gore and shit, but a show aimed at an older audience. Cartoon Network definitely held the show back.
And people defend this. Despite the fact that Steven and Connie could have been stuck there for the rest of Connie's mortal life in that jail if Blue didn't come by when she did. Good problem solving my ass.
>”I’ll have the chicken.”
It was TV-PG just like Regular Show
I have a hard time calling it for kids full stop
Hmmm, true. But it probably had cartoon network holding it back. Along with a mixed bag of writers maybe?
>steven just gives up to the enemy effectively throwing his life away with no concern for his family and friends
>this is supposed to be heroic and aspirational instead of selfish and reckless
this thread is full of cowards and simps. women won't fuck you because you threw your coat over a puddle for them.
Maybe because the spent most of the fuckin series together working as a team, then Steven acts like a faggot in the most dangerous situation
What a retarded way to look at it. It's not about getting women to fuck you, incel.
>no concern for his family and friends
Literally does it TO save his family and friends. How could you see it any other way?
>this is supposed to be heroic and aspirational instead of selfish and reckless
So instead everyone was supposed to be taken to homeworld and killed instead? Even though it was technically his fault they were all kidnapped in the first place, due to his list. Can you not understand basic concepts or something? Or are you just mad that you white knighted a girl in the past and she still didn't give a fuck about you after? Sounds like salt
Oh, here comes the connie defense force!
His family and friends were his primary concern. What was Stevonnie going to do when more powerful people took the fattest of L's simultaneously in that situation?
Its less she gets worse and more like she just never gets better.
Lapis is the better gem anyway, and Spinel of course.
Assuming is correct, it's likely that was talking about Connie starting an orgy at a fancy ball. THAT was colossally stupid.
So is everyone in this show an emotionally unstable manipulative cunt?
i just think rebecca is a talentless hack that had a decent enough idea in the right moment, and i dont mean the stupid PD twist.
We will never hear about her ever again, unlike george lucas who also has indiana jones and lucas arts.
greg is a good boy.
Uggh, Im watching Kevin Party right now and I fucking hate her.
>Dropped Steven as a friend immediately after he got back, despite everything they went through
>Doesn't even once try to talk to him about it, leaves him in the dark and instead goes to a party of someone they both despise.
>Is having a good time, doesn't even give a shit about him already
>Even makes Lion hateable somehow, because he left steven for her, just to add to her unlikableness
She is being written as a total cunt out of nowhere. For some reason she got a haircut too, like, for some symbolic bullshit. This whole episode is written strangely too, as if they were actually dating, which they weren't. Shit writing, really really shitty, annoying writing.
Literally everybody except Andy, Buck, and Sour Cream.
nobody would've agreed with Steven's suicidal plan, that's why he made that desicion himself and it led to Lars getting killed.
You're right, instead they all could've been killed instead! Much better solution! Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst all shattered, and the humans put in the zoo or just shot into space.
See, this moment I can forgive, since they were so caught up in having fun they probably didn't think about fusing.
And the alternative would be? This is why I hate that arc. It's one thing to admit it was a no-win situation, rash decisions were made and everyone reacted poorly, but then Steven's portrayed as being in the wrong solely for taking a semi-logical option.
Steven's portrayed as being in the wrong solely for taking a semi-logical option.
Incorrect. He's portrayed as being in the wrong because the writers suck and needed a brief bit of drama. Just finished watching Kevin Party and it's resolved so quickly. It's retarded. Connie's reason for being mad was so poorly executed. Like, she's angrier than his own dad and the gems. Fucking stupid as hell. the writers need that teen romance drama though right? Fuck
Steven is at fault because Connie and the Gems wouldn't have prefered Steven to trade his life for theirs, no matter the context. there's even an episode about how sacrifice is stupid because Pearl didn't value her wellbeing in spite of Rose's protests. and Steven's decision wasn't logical, it was literally made in the heat of the moment and he felt guilty for unawarely naming the people who got captured.
you can keep agreeing that Connie gave him too much shit for his suicidal choice but that doesn't automatically make Steven right. it just means that you don't put equal value over life, yours or others.
I can sorta understand her frustration, but the shit that pisses me off the most is that she takes Lion and his mom's sword with her when she leaves.
Big agree.
The show feels like it has so much potential, but is drops the ball with the most boring of shit results. It reminds me of adventure time where it keeps hyping up big events, but they always resolve in the most unsatisfactory rushed status quo shit.
I think it has a lot to do with Connie's unresolved arc of living out her Young Adult Novel fantasies through her interactions with Steven and the Gems. It clearly colors a lot of her actions and she outright stated she didn't like being left out, but the crew either doesn't want to portray her too negatively, or have her be too closely tied to Steven so all that build up just exists in a vacuum.
Again, what's the alternative? What could he have done that would spare their feelings and get Aquamarine to stand down without putting himself in danger? I'm not even saying Steven wasn't at fault, but he certainly wasn't wrong to do what he did. Contrary to the show's edict, sometimes sacrifices are entirely necessary, and the show's even accidentally proved this numerous times. It may not be the answer that makes everyone feel good, but it's the truth.
>it just means that you don't put equal value over life, yours or others.
That isn't fair, Aquamarine won there wasn't anything anyone can do they could've easily killed a townie or at the very least the humans were all going to be kidnapped and with them losing the Roaming Eye earlier that season... there's no getting them back. It wasn't like Pearl uselessly jumping into harm's way.
I don't even think exploring Connie's hurt feelings was a bad idea, but it shouldn't have been used as an excuse to give a mini timeskip so Lars can become a badass pirate guy. To a lot of people it felt like the show was prioritizing Connie's feelings over Lars' safety. And there was a lot of angles they should have explored. Not just bringing up what else could they have done in that situation? but also Steven feelings, how he admitted he feels responsible for Rose's crimes. Connie doesn't even comfort him at all about how he watched his friend die or any of the guilt pumping through his veins it was all about Connie, they even go so far as to make Steven *smug* about his sacrifice to validate her feelings further just was not a good watch.
Some of y'all are treating this like it was a grievous irreconcilable falling out between the two and not just an ugly argument that both parties regretted and mended after a matter of days.
It still wasn't handled the best, though.
Connie is mad because you can't justify a bad decision with the fact that you randomly stumbled into a lucky break that mitigated how stupid a move it was.
Yeah, the argument that Steven's decision was the only logical one kinda flies out the window when you factor in how he only managed to both survive and get back from the Homeworld (a place so far away that getting there at all was considered impossible for the protagonist) through what can charitably be described as a huge string of complete dumb luck where anything going wrong would've meant certain death. He was basically committing suicide then trying to treat it as the only correct course of action he could've taken.
That's a product of being a TV show in cable.
Compare the Pilot look to the current show.
Connie is just an inherently selfish person. It’s a good thing she and Steven are finally separating.
OH LOOK IT'S THIS THREAD AGAIN
Thankfully some people aren't retarded. The wait of six months for a mediocre episode clearly colored a lot of people's opinions
It's a character driven show you mong. The "direction" is the characters interacting and evolving. The example in the OP is an example of this. You just want story story story which was NEVER the point of Steven Universe.
>There's still people who dont understand that the characters dont know everything that the audience does, and act accordingly.
Literal autism and/or sociopathy.
Because Steven Universe as a show was paced around delayed gratification. The promise of the big reveal, the major showdown, the huge turning point. Spaced out over months of hiatuses which could be billed to viewers as important events. It added to the slight of hand that this series was some deep epic, when in reality it was a slice of life show with a lore more interesting than the creator knew what to do with.
Sugar never wanted an epic, she just accidentally got one when a few episodes teased the concept of Homeworld as a looming threat, and she was so swept up in the high of praise that she constantly teased those grand stakes over and over. But she knew that once she went all in, then her slice of life with alien OCs show would go away. So instead she made sure to put off the plot as much as possible until it all had to be squeezed into a weak finale in “Change Your Mind”. All so we could have 4 episodes dedicated to Sadie being in a band that wound up breaking up anyway.
Stevonnie really should have been defused and Connie given to White for reprogramming.
Wouldn't a nice, obedient Pearl-hybrid have been better for Pink than whatever the feick she picked up on earth?
Where can I watch the new episodes
Kim Cartoon

Ask on the Mega Video Thread
See, this guy gets it.
Wasn't it more that Steven was being nonchalant about the whole deal and sort of shrugging off how his actions made others feel? Sure there was little alternative but he could have handled the return a bit better.
Connie was still a bitch on her end too though
No I mean the ones that air today
>It's one thing to admit it was a no-win situation, rash decisions were made and everyone reacted poorly, but then Steven's portrayed as being in the wrong solely for taking a semi-logical option.
I can see Connie being the angriest of all because she hasn't seen how oppressive homeworld could be, and hasn't resigned herself to not be a big part of Steven's magical destiny like Greg has. She's been working so hard for months and Steven just gives up without a fight.
She has the luxury of being able to be angry about that, because the alternative was she would get angry over her powerlessness to stop aquamarine. There was no good end to that situation, but Connie getting angry at Steven instead of the situation shows her lack of maturity, as well as highlights Steven's obliviousness to his talk-no-jutsu not always working.
This arc basically ruined Steven series after the amazing arc of Homeworld, it's like the Breezy episode from Adventure time
They where at gun point at that point, it was either give himself up or get everyone captured.
What would have happened if Lars and Connie swapped places?
For the first time to Homeworld, I assume. Because I can't see Lars being Steven's friend and first fusion.
It wasn’t that bad, bro.
Also, NOTHING is like “Breezy.” Don’t you dare ever compare something to that garbage.
>Connie goes to Homeworld
>Thinks its going to be like one of her animes
>Gets her arm broken and isolated from Steven before they can fuse
>Yellow Zircon uses Connie as part of a bargain to get Steven to plead guilty
>Connie gets left behind when Steven escapes
>Is left at the non-existent mercy of the Diamonds. Now the only thing left of the hated Rose Quartz to focus their anger and hate on.
Only way to stop her bitching. The cunt.
Assuming all the same story beats play out, Connie gets pinked and Lars continues being a schmuck. Steven then has to deal with Connie realizing she will never have a normal life, and her parents being fucking PISSED their progeny was killed in space and resurrected as a zombie.
I'd imagine Connie would get angry because her adventures have always been a codependant act with Steven and suddenly she's left on homeworld to fend for herself? For Lars it did some good because he needed to find himself without everyone's expectation of a reversion to old Lars. For Connie, it's either wish fulfillment or the crushing reality that she's just a small creature in a large universe.
Connie's always been able to walk the line between normal girl and magical adventures. If she went to homeworld, that line gets crossed and there's no going back. If what she's doing in SU future is any indication, when push comes to shove she chooses normalcy.
Good. Steven can finally be happy without her
Steven couldnt revert all the brainwashing Pearl did to her, Connie is as suicidal as Pearl was in the war
It's many things. The fact that it was made by Cartoon Network Studios, who is a pretty cheap studios, and the fact that it was mostly written by newbies. Say what you will about AT, but that show was also made by Frederator Studios and it had a bunch of Flapjack and Spongebob writers working on it.
At least in AT, the journey to those big events was fun and creative. The destination wasn't always satisfying, but the journey of getting there was a great time. I cannot say the same about SU.
