Why are there so few games set in the distant past? You often see Greece and Rome and such in strategy games, but very rarely in real games. Assassin's Creed is popular enough that there should have been more games like it, but no. There was Ryse: Son of Rome and that's basically it.

Oh, and Kingdom Come Delivarance. I forgot about that; also a great game, but not at all influential.

Oh, you.

There's not a lot of cohesive and consistent material to work with, so you gotta improvise a lot. It's a very hit-or-miss endeavor.

There certainly could be way more, but Feudal Japan, Medivial Europe, and Vikings/Norse stuff shows up somewhat frequently, especially in influences if not straight historical.

It's really just historical influences outside of that that get the shaft, and even so Greek and Roman stuff is probably the next most common after those alongside Egypt and China.

India, Mesopotamia, the Islamic Middle East, Mesoamerica, Southeast Asia, the Andes, and West Africa almost NEVER show up in anything, though, and are really the most underulitized of all: There's like the Prince of Persia and the original AC for the Islamic Middle East; Asura's Wrath and Indivisible for INdia/Southeast Asia but even then that's more hindu/buddhist mythology, and then I think Aztez (see webm) is straight up the only solely Mesoamerican focused game unless you also count Expeditions Conquistadors, but that's moreso Colional-europe/age of exploration then Mesoamerica in theme even if it takes place in Mexico during the Conquest (and curse of the dead gods by extension but that's quite a bit more fantastical). I've NEVER seen an Andean game, like, at all.

Again like OP i'm excluding strategy titles unless they specifically focus on a given area and games which just feature a theme for a level or two, if those counted then pretty much every 2d/3d platformer has at least one egyptian/middle eastern/mesopotamian desert level and 1 jungle mesoamerican level

You know what OP means, like in the context of a non-strategy title.

There's certainly more so then in completely fictional games and those get made all the time

Is this your call sign lol?

random text is just how I bump threads I intend to reply to but haven't gotten around to yet

I prefer oak to pine.Much more confident in its strength

To be fair people descended from those cultures who would be more interested don't make videogames. They might work in a game company, but the heritage of the company is not theirs.

Didn't the sources I posted as a stopgap to you in the /k/ thread say oak anyways?

Still gonna try to get you way more detqailed info when I can but I'm just super busy right now.

Sure, but plenty of Japanese themed games are also made in the US and plenty of Western Fanatasy/Medivial games are made in Japan: People might tend to make stuff from their own culture and history, but they salso don't mind making others when they know there's cool shit to use and/or that it'd be popular.

Unforantely it's a very chicken and the egg problem, where people won't know there's, say, cool shit in ancient indian or mesoamerican history without already being exposed to it in media or education and that medication/curicullumn won't get made without an existing knowledge/demand, etc.

It's boring to do unless it's fantasy or you're a history nerd. Sci Fi is inherently interesting because of the technology potential and exploring the unknown.

A lot of those are game-inspired games, or lend heavily from other mainstream media.

The reason there are few historical games is that most people don't care about history. Even most people who CLAIM they care about history just like swords and shit. Publishers are just being smart by giving customers what they want.

Also Ass Creed started off about half history and half fantasy. Now they are about 90% fantasy, because again that's what sells.

>most people don't care about history
Why would you set anything in ww2 viking age or indeed any time period then?
There must be something compelling about the historical time period otherwise they wouldn't set it in it.

ROMANS were not blond. Blond genes are literally barbarian

I'd only play a gladiator game if there were half naked female gladiators
