Hearing how bad the game was from people here according to the Japanese im surprised how decent the reviews actually are, I expected the game to be around the 60 mark or below

Haven't played it myself but I'm repeating what journos and the people on /m/ who played it said:

It was a blander, safe retread of the original Sakura Wars game devoid of the personal drama the original games had.
Unlike the original, the new game feels more like an introduction to the new cast than being its own complete game and self-contained story. For example the tournament plot is dropped suddenly and without justification, the redhead girl doesn't get a chapter and Sakura is the only member of the team who gets a power-up.
Most of the dialog isn't voiced, which is a big no-no in this kind of game.

There are minor things like the new musou gameplay being braindead or some people disliking Kubo as character designer over Fukishima but that's it.

Thanks for a relatively detailed explanation. I'll probably pass and go through the older games then, until it drops on sale. It doesn't sound terrible, but I can see how it's a much, much weaker entry just if some of the characters are outright missing chapters. That's something fundamental you'd expect them to nail. It sucks to hear that too, because I was looking forward to the redhead and brown girl a lot.

The Sakura Wars games are dating sim / visual novels, with a small fight at the end. Pretty much 85% dating sim 15% fighting

Of all the older games, only the fifth one was localized (and that one is considered the worst in the series). The very first game (Sakura Wars for the Sega Saturn) was fantranslated last December so if you want to try the series download that one.
Gamefaqs has a script translation of Sakura Wars 3 so you can try playing it if you don't mind looking at two screens at the same time; It's very detailed for every route.
