Its really hard. I wanted to be a translator too and got up to like 300-400 kanji with personal study but then quarantine happened and I lost all my steam without college. Like said you need to do this shit religiously daily unless you live with a japanese person and its really hard without some insane passion.

Corona threw me off because class gave me daily practice on stuff I had already studied and introduced grammar as we went along so it let me grind kanji in my spare time to build on that. But now I lost being able to practice with classmates on top of my elderly nihonjin professor barely being able to use a computer. I think I need a better way to grind new vocab because learning it with kanji makes me want to sudoku.

Most of the available J--->E translation work available is known as technical translation, i.e. medical, financial and legal documents. This is obviously boring as fuck but you can make a nice reliable income from this. More popular but less common areas are game translation and literary translation. Forget about literary translation that is a dead end unless you maybe have a graduate degree and translation studies and secure a lucrative book deal, game translation is pretty fun but would maybe require relocating to Japan and is slightly more competitive I guess although I have no experience in that market.
