I never cared much about this whole streaming business, but I gave it a little more thought than usual when my co-worker told me his son gave away all in all £1500 to streamers. It came to light when they were suppose to use £1000 of his saved up money which he saved up for 8 years to pay his driving lessons and his gaming school education. His anger came mostly because it was his money that he gave to his son, and not something his son earned. So he locked him out of wi-fi for the entire year, no driving lessons and no gaming school. Added cherry was that his son scammed his dad out of 60 quid which he said was used to pay for school material.
So what the fuck? This streaming thing is sounding real fucked up. Why don't this new generation of kids like to play games themselves? I mean he has a sister around his age, there could have been a lot of fun co-op gaming. Remember back in school when we hated to wait for our turn to play.

Never participated in that but I get it. Streamers and Camgirls are the modern replacement if you have no friends and girlfriend. They are -real- people on the other side whom you can interact with through the use of money, instead of say daydreaming about fictional friends or gf, so it makes sense why people prefer it. Of course some people aren't able to get it because they can't get over the fakeness barrier, but there's enough people who have never thought of that as a problem. Just look at how many people go crazy over porn girls, VR models, sexdolls, vtubers, etc. for example.

this isn't what it is about ironically. popular streams foster a community based around their persona, that sense of community fulfills a need for those that participate in it. Since the focus isn't so much interacting with others involved as it is having the streamer mention or talk to you specifically, and money heighten the chance of that. it is basically a cult of personality that provides a fleeting high and sense of belonging. Video games have nothing to do with it other than being the platform that happens in the background, a successful persona could literally be doing anything else.
Kids these days have it tough. Parents are raising them on chink knockoff iPads with unrestrained access to every 'surrogate friend' they can find on Youtube. Add in their new 'friend' begging for money on Twitch and a little bit of competition with every other fan for shoutouts or spots on a donation leaderboard and it's no surprise when they fall for the trap. Don't want to feel left out by not donating or getting that little icon next to your name. Don't want to face the fact that this is a one sided relationship so pay them to say your name a few times. Desperate to have a cool and popular friend who actually plays games WITH you so pay even more for the chance to be in their server.
Schools won't be teaching them to avoid these things when they can't even keep them out of the schoolyard environment. You need to do that as a parent or suffer the £1500 consequences.
