You need accountants, lawyers, janitorial staff, HR , marketing, artists, managers, custodial staff to take care of buildings, people to shitpost on Yas Forums, etc.. it's not like all of those need some super advanced background and often in things like HR or marketing diversity is extremely helpful because it increases the range in your marketing capabilities.

What's important in games is VARIETY: Having a wide range of cultural, artistic, and lifestyle expierences to infuence and inform games so they aren't pidgeonholed into specific ideas and concepts and visual styles: I think the majority of people, even on Yas Forums, would be into vidya taking place in the Aztec Empire, see pic; or African mythology or even a game which uses themes of what it's like to grow up as a girl or being gay in some oppressive islamic country: Those would all be unqiue, underultiized ideas with potential for cool stuff.

The problem is that the people asking for diversity in games don't care about this: They care about it in terms of just wanting representation. There's nothing wrong with this inherently either, and to an extent super young kids do benefit from having role models that matches themselves, but this is massively over-estimated as something important outside of that and is largerly just virtue signalling that they care about progressive social issues involving race/sex/gender etc.

Moreover, it also allows them an easy out of actually making fundamentally different expierences: If it's about representation and not variety, they can just add a few extra black people or women compared to what they'd otherwise do and call it a day without actually making games with fundamentally different themes or concepts: It'll be the same generic third person modern surfival action game, just with a few more minorities.

That being said, I do think that many developers do legitmately care about diversity in terms of both representation AND variety, and there IS legitmately a problem of publishers and executives nixxing anything that has women or minorities in lead roles, but pushing for diversity of representation isn't changing that since it just causes those execs to do what I just mentioned anyways, not fund or support fundamentally new game ideas.
