Eh, it was fine. Apocalypse was improved on gameplay and comfiness but worse on most other things.

They really aren't comparable to better SMT games like Nocturne, Soul Hackers, Devil Survivor, or Raidou 2. It's maybe on the same level as Devil Survivor 2.

This guy is pretty much spot on though I think he's a bit TOO harsh.

Also nocturne is overrated. The story is hard to follow, the characters I couldn't care any less about, and the combat system is much slower than the games that came later.

DeSu is the peak of SMT just because it cuts all the unnecessary fluff
All mainline SMT and all spinoffs like it suffer from uninteresting normal encounters and absurd grind for fusion materials and strategic options

I'd say it's the peak of SMT because your choices viscerally matter from day to day.

The balance is whack as fuck, hard through Naraku and then pissbaby easy until the very end. Too much freedom and control in fusions so you can just make a murder machine with next to no effort. I licked out and got neutral without trying but I know people bitch a out that too.

Sequel is much better even though everyone hates it because it has teenagers or what the fuck they all got their panties in a wad about. Fixes every gameplay problem and the story is more interesting and the alignments are more nuanced.

Oh god yeah it fucking was. I think the game was like a B- but the OST is A++

This game is so fucking good. Absolute favorite dungeon crawler of all time. Fuck I wanna replay it now.

This has become a major issue with all of the SMTs and Persona games. Just fuse the highest level .jpg with all the shit you need to hit every element weakness, heal instantly, null/resist most shit and buff/debuff everything, then go slaughter everything for a few hours. You don't even have to pay attention to what the demon actually is.

I'd say the solution is stricter fusion rules each race having exclusive elemental attacks and buffs, with maybe a bit of Soul Hackers free will so you can't just force every demon to cover as many bases as possible. You'd actually have to swap demons in battle instead of keeping a comp full of benchwarming fusion fuel.

Didn't Strange Journey have something that fixed or at least alleviated this? I haven't played the remake yet (I have it but I haven't installed it yet), but I remember the DS version having requirements or some shit.

I thought the Apocalypse system was at least a step in the right direction.
For people who don't know, they let you give a Jack Frost Agi, for example, but Jack Frost had negative affinity for Fire spells so it was weak as fuck. Bufu would get bonuses.
That way, the player can still choose whatever they want, but they have to live with the consequences.
That system was way too onerous for me. It seemed completely opaque without a webpage open and the special fusion items felt so scarce that I wound up not using them as often as I should have.

SMT IV:A has affinities though.

I already said it in the last thread, but I really want racial skills/passives in the maingames.
I still think it is lame that demon races don't mean or do shit outside of fusion foddering.
Yeah I know megamis are more inclined to using magic/healing and brutes are more inclined to using physical moves and all that crap, but what race your tank or healer doesn't do or mean shit from a gameplay perspective especially when megami's can be physical fighters as well like athena.
