My entire life i have mostly been a TTRPG or XBOX with friends type gamer. however as this Quarantine continues I am curious of the pros of playstation gaming. So before shit hit the fan i went out and bought a PS2. I am on Yas Forums hoping someone can ship me some titles that will PS2 pill me.

The biggest challenge is hooking the PS2 up to your television. What setup are you running?

As far as the games go alot of games ran better on Gamecube/Xbox and some have gotten passable remasters (but some remasters are not so good).

I would recommend you some of my favorite but not very well known PS2 games but you'll shit on them (and let's be honest, you will shit on the well known ones too) so I don't see the point.

i have never picked a playstation up in my life mostly because My older brother slobbed Xbox Knob. geniunely curious in any titles that had you captivated

idort here. PS2 was a good own back in gen 6 but it has actually aged worse than the other consoles from that generation.
No internal hard drive.
Only 2 controller ports.
Worst version of multiplats from that gen.
Most games are now rereleased and on PC or later consoles with better framw rates.

I'm honestly strughling to think of anything you NEED a PS2 for. I guess Silent Hill 3 and 4 are good options because the remake butchered them. But there really isn't much else. All the popular games are mostly available elsewhere. This is actually a huge props to Sony for making their older content available currently. You quite literally still need a gamecube to experience the full joys of that system and Microsoft only recently started letting Xbox original games be backwards compatible on the newer consoles (to date however the best versions of Halo and Halo 2 are still the versions released on original Xbox)
Anyway yeah that's my take. You're better off getting the MGS legacy collection for PS3 or God of War Legacy collection for PS3 or the Final Fantasy Rema- well, you get the point.

Exactly.
If you were interested on PS2 games you would have grabbed the console years ago. You're checking them now out of curiosity and boredom, not because you genuinely want to play them.

So, my advise is don't bother.

>The biggest challenge is hooking the PS2 up to your television. What setup are you running?
doubt it i got a 4k tv last year that still has component

most toasters can emulate it fine nowadays, maybe you shoulda gone with that now that the discs are getting harder to come by. the Ace Combat titles on PS2 were all great and standalone if you get one get Zero, then 4&5 if it's a hit.

hope the latency doesn't ruin it for ya

Metal Gear Solid and God of War have the standard remaster issues but they are incidental (not deliberate) and really don't effect the game or the presentation. I would say those are actually superior to the PS2 versions.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 though I really can't get behind the goofy ass new character models. I'm sure they had a reason but it can't have been a good one.

Regarding the hard drive, its the only way to roll with a PS2. Load it full of isos.

I completely disagree. There are many fantastic / great PS2 titles that never got PC / modern console ports and PS2 emulation will never been good. I still have my fat connected to my HD TV and I have a slim stored in case of my fat dying forever.
You would have a pont if emulation were perfect. Until then, you can't do anything but own the original hardware.

(I won't name those games because I don't want to help OP (it's not like you can't google them anyway) but still I don't want to help a future shitposter)

hmm. what is the best model of PS2 to own for modding? I have a slim

In my experience most "fantastic" gen 5/6 games that don't have proper emulation or rereleases are actually not that great and only hold up on personal levels due to nostalgia factor.

it has an HDD bay. just buy a cheap network adapter and you can use any HDD you want.

>personal levels due to nostalgia factor
The same can be said for every game.

play this
one of the best arcade racers of the gen
then play the sequels

I haven't noticed any although ive only played need for speed

right but we can employ common sense and discuss the specifics until whether aomeone is just being nostalgic becomes more likely. Nostalgia is the worst drug in modern society because it hinders us from being able to think logically about quality. Quality is subjective, yes, but nostalgia bias is just an unnecessary extra lense that only neddlessly complicates things.
For example, my first game I ever got was Sonic 3D blast. Love it to death, but I can objectively state that its not very good.
Most of the JRPG shovelware trash on the PS1 and 2 is not very good. Legend of the Dragoon is not very good. FF7 is meh at best. Doom 64 is ironically good but didn't become so until years and years later when we became able to play it without an N64 controller.

what does the network adapter have to do with anything

gen 5 is shit in general
Most overrated gen by fat

yeah soooooo many of the classics from that age have aged terirbly. That whole gen was a massive tech demo about entering the 3D age, very few games stand today as 10/10s from it.

based and accurate

Play tenchu fatal shadows and tenchu wrath of heaven. great stealth games

it's how you plug the hdd in. i think they figured you'd need a hdd to play mmos on the ps2 or something

meh

You know you can emulate that on a patato right?

>thread is nothing but people shitting on the PS2 and its library

ah

The PS2 didn't sell like hotcakes because of its library

That's how it connects to the console. That hole in the back that is commonly used for hiding weed was actually used to put in a hard drive for Final Fantasy XI or Resident Evil Outbreak. And today you can buy a SATA enabled version for modern hard drives, I'm using the banggood adapter in the picture. Works great.

PS2 is actually shit and i should neck myself for having bought one. welp, thanks bois

Your brother choose the Xbox for a reason.
As points out, the PS2 only sold due to being the cheapest DVD player in the market, not for having an actually good (or even decent) game library.

this
Nobody knew how good Xchads had it that gen

>All of that Shovelware
>Only a few 7/10 or 8/10 games
No wonder people bought it to use it as a DVD player rather than as a console.

I wouldn't agree. The Xbox ran circles around PS2, but nothing can compete with that library in total.

I have all Xbox and Gamcube games I want in physical form but I'm always digging fresh shit out of Playstation 2, the library is legit bottomless.

prefer the sequel but i can dig it

I dont want your green or your poor taste to infect me

welp shoulda listened. now i regret participating in this thread.

As someone who picked up a fatboy ps2 not too long ago, I mostly use it to play God Hand and the GTA trilogy. Nothing better than hooking up Vice City to a CRT and going down memory lane.

what a fucking trash pic.
>Time Crisis 2, 3, and the spin off
>worthwhile
fucking YIKES!
>Sonic Mega Collection +
oh ffs who wven made this list? The Plus rerelease is notorious for having subpar emulation efforts compared to the original.
>all those fucking abysmal fighter ports that run at half the frame rate of their cabnit counterparts in arcades.

I despise pics like this, for any consolex because they completely miss the point of what people like OP are looking for. You know that special feeling where you're 6 years old and it's Christmas Morning and under the tree you get your first console and it comes complete with _____ and you fall in love? Yeah, that's just you being 6 years old. The truth is _____ is not very good. Nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, nobody, NOBODY, not a single person ON EARTH that didn't have the console already wants to wade through entire swamps of mediocre games. They only want the really special stuff. The gems. The secret sauce. You don't have someone who never played Splinter Cell grind through SC1 and Pandora Tomorrow, you start them right off with Chaos Theory. You don't tell someone to play System Shock 1 before 2. And you don't overload someone with a list of hundreds of games for a console they've never owned. As people get older, they don't have time to run through all the random "ok" tier titles. They only have time for the greats, the games that have truely stood the test of time. The pic you posted is an insult to that fact. Just tell him what the top 5 PS2 games are that he can't play on a later system or PC and leave it at that.
Time Crisis 2 and 3 for console, jesus fuck user, seek counseling

Fucking This

I wish more anons had this style of delivery
I kek'd

System Shock 1 is better than 2 you tasteless redditor

i usually start niggers off with a middling entry just to build it up. like AC4/5 before 0 or Persona 3 before 4.

The pic has labels for games on PC other platforms though
Also most games on that list are good, that's why it says noteworthy and not must play

OP here, for reference the titles i bought on recommendation were Gauntlet Dark legacy, FF9, Kingdom Hearts, and Prince of Persia: the sands of time

I have a 2 TB WD black connected to a chinese network adapter. I boot up the console and it loads into OPL.

even then you would have a casual who has never played the series olay 2 first and then if they like it play the first 1.
And that'a beaides the point, you know i'm right.

>Also most games on that list are good
Did you not hear me? "Good" in 2020 is borderline unplayable today. Only the great hames matter to people who disnt already have the syatem. Nobody is picking up a PS2 to play Disaster Report 2 or The Bouncer. They only want the great shit.

MGS3.

you don't need a PS2 to play MGS3 unless you really just want to play it at a lower frame rate

Dark cloud

quality over quantity but I do agree the PS2 has more "good" games by a significant margin

>"Good" in 2020 is borderline unplayable today.
I can pick up Katamari or Onimusha and still have a good time, also by your logic we shouldnt bother with emulation of older systems since most games are outdated by now

Not a bad selection.

Some stuff I would recommend:
SMT Nocturne
Ape Escape series
Ratchet and Clank series
Zone of Enders series
Pac Man World 2
Norrath series
Gitaroo Man

oh yeah that's right, PSX is on the menu too. might be hard to stomach the graphics these days but MGS still holds up imho. might as well look into Armored Core and Tenchu too. Sands of Time is fucking excellent except for the combat, which they fixed in the sequel that unfortunately lacked all of the originals charm and character. if you're into JRPGS Suikoden 1 & 2 are essential, 3 & 5 are pretty good too.

emulation is fine. I don't want anything lost to time. I just don't think we need to lie about attributing greatnesa yo only mediocre games. This is the kind of shit we hold OGN accountable for when they give everything under the sun that has a budget an 8/10 at the lowest, but then we turn around and do the exact same thing only because "muh [insert console] library".
That's all I'm saying.

The list said noteworthy as in 'good/interesting enough to caught your attention' if it said 10/10 games you would be right but it doesnt

Metal Gear Aolid is a neat experience.
But anyone that thinks MGS1 is a good blueprimt for a proper videogame and not just an early attempt to take advantage of th he specifications of the PS1 for telling a story that in all honesty would be beter suited in another medium of entertainment, be it literature, film, or even something obscure like broadway, is retarded and just a fanboy.

can we talk about ps2 on /vr/ yet?

>MGS on broadway
I... would absolutely pay to see that

>The list said noteworthy as in 'good/interesting enough to caught your attention
only based on nostalgic value. The majority of that list is less replayable than fortnite

I played MGS1 a few years ago and loved it but couldn't get into the second one at all

I have never truly gotten into JRPGS, but thats mostly because i've never been pointed in the correct direction. RPGs in general would be the ticket and i truly don't mind turned based combat being a D&D junkie

>nostalgia value
I didn't grew up with a PS2 and yet a lot of games I picked up from that list were entertaining even if they are rough around the edges due the limitations
