getting a game for free indicates the company responsible permits it according to their optimal business strategy, pirating it cuts into their profits from their perspective and takes away their choice in the matter. Buying used or borrowing a used copy doesn't replicate them infinitely off one copy and redistribute them.

I don’t buy used games.
I don’t buy garbage games or games I’m mildly interested in.
In fact, I don’t play many games. I’ll buy indie games on sale. And if I like a developer, like ASW or Fromsoft, I’ll buy their games on launch at full price, or even get limited editions and such to support them. Same for indie games, if I buy a game on discount that I really liked on Steam, I’ll buy it again for like Switch for example at full price.

As for free games, like on PSN for example, I hardly even bother downloading them in 99% of the cases, with the slight 1% being if it caught ny eye and I wanna demo it out. But like I said, I limit my game time, and this only play few select games from devs I already like.

Why not just not even play the game at all? Why even bother wasting your TIME with AAA garbage?

When you download a game during a free giveaway, you get it for free with the consent of the publisher, and it's legal. When you pirate a game, you get it for free without the consent of the publisher, and it's illegal. When you buy a used game, the publisher is butthurt about it, but it's still legal.

My post clearly mentioned that piracy is free and illegal, and my post also clearly pointed out that buying a used game is legal (and the fact that it's not free is implied by the word "buy"). Those are differences. The only similarity is that publishers are butthurt about both things.

There's very little difference in terms of publisher/developer revenue, which is why publishers hate used game sales as much as they hate piracy. They also hated game rentals, back when that was a thing.

If there's any way in which used game sales are better than piracy from the publisher's perspective, it's that the person who buys a game new, and then sells it, gets some money with which to buy more new games. Also, people are perhaps more likely to buy new games if they know they can be sold later in order to regain some of the cost.

The licensing. Game companies/stores sell you the license to play their game. By getting a game for free, you receive the license for free. When you pirate the game, you don't have that license, and therefore are breaking the digital distribution laws. Or something like that.
Probably the same could be said about buying a used game, in that you buy the ownership of the license from the other guy.
In terms of money, buying used games is worse than piracy. Much like piracy, the devs don't see any money from you. Unlike piracy, there is no chance you'll pay the devs anything if you already bought the 2nd hand copy. With piracy you can still say "I like it" and buy the copy via normal channels. Also your money goes to some rando.
