If anything Indians, Pakistanis, and Bangladeshis are all technically just Indians. They all belong to the Indic race. Because it is disingenuous and meaningless to refer to a group of people from a continent that has various races when the race is a more meaningful descriptor. It’s like calling Egyptians “Africans”, or Russians “Asian”. It is deliberate and for the purposes of obscuring racial data (like calling Mexican criminals “white”).

It’s not even an American Pacific vs. British India thing.

Europeans have been calling Arabs, Tartars and even Turks “Asian” since the Middle Ages.

What basically happened putting it simply, is that Europeans found this place to the East of them called “Asia”. Because travel and exploration was difficult and slow, initially the term “Asian” referred primarily to those people nearest to Europe because Europeans encountered them the most.

But then as time went on more and more of Asia was explored until Europeans reached the Pacific, at which point EVERYONE in Asia of course could be properly called “Asian”, from Turks to Arabs to Tartars to Mongolians, to Siamese.

It’s not that it’s improper to call ANY of these people Asian, it’s just not particularly descriptive since there are so many peoples native to Asia. Most people use the term as shorthand for whatever Asian people HAPPEN to be most common where they are.

What’s strange though is this largely American notion that ONLY East Asians can and should be called just “Asian” but that if you want to use the term to refer to Indians or Arabs you should qualify it with a “West” or “South”.

There’s something vaguely arrogant about this DESU. How about we call them all Asians and use East west and south for disambiguation as required?
