If as a leader your course of action is to reveal yourself and your faction, the last thing that you should do is brutalize the enemy with means that are uncalled for such as genocide.
But, what's done is done, clearly this individual would fit the profile of unhinged, but the writing shouldn't portray what happened the way it did. In the LN essentially nothing serious had happened, and now the narration continues to completely ignore the crimes being done, the protagonist is portrayed as so self-aware that we've only gotten a single sentence so far about these atrocities, just a mere "oh, my friend would think less of me, no big deal", which speaks volumes about the quality of writing.
