Why the FUCK are there so many Irish in the South?

Most Anglo Americans mark "American" as their ancestry and this map completely ignores it. Not to mention non-Anglo ancestries always end up being a bit overreported.
The "Irish" in the south is probably a mix of people who are aware of their Ulster Scots ancestry and mistakenly marked "Irish" and people who like getting fucked up on St Patricks Day so they marked Irish.

If there were Irish in the South there would be Catholics, but the area is not Catholic at all.

Mormons actually research their ancestry because of their religion (founders of Ancestry.com are Mormons) so they are aware that they are Anglo rather than putting down "American" or German because Grandma had a German last name

I am by far not a specialist in your country history, but i think that most people from Irish origin, that come during the colonial time, where or British born in Ireland or "Scottish Irish".

We don't have very much Spanish ancestry directly from Spain, and it is actually non-Hispanic White so it excludes Latin Americans.
Yes, a lot of Ulster Scots/Scots Irish came during Colonial time, but that isn't really an Irish origin, they came from Northern England/Southern Scotland. They don't even think of themselves as Irish today.
The actual Irish came in the mid to late 19th century and formed the lower class of Northern cities, taking factory jobs, and than police and firemen jobs. There ended up being a lot of resentment between the Anglos which caused the formation of the anti-Catholic anti-immigrant Know Nothing Party. But they didn't really mind the German immigrants who mostly went to live on farms.

Don't know sure why they chose this name, but it has something to do with the time that Irealnd rebelled and the brits send troops to peacefy the region. Since Catholic Irish hated Protestant Irish, the protestant irish helped the brits, and receive the catholic land as gift for being loyal.

Ulster Scots are literally only a thing ON the fucking mountains of Appalachia. While they may have spread out a bit from there, I fucking doubt they made it to the Mississipi delta. Realistically only the eastern half of Tennessee and Kentucky have even a tenuous claim on Irish ancestry, and even then, they're fucking Scots who lived there, not Irish. Real Irish were much more spread out and generally lived alongside other frontiersmen instead of forming communities, besides Boston.

Because it’s not actually true. Genetic testing reveals that British is very much the predominant ancestry in the US.

The meme that most Americans are German originates from flawed data in the 2000 census. The two primary issues were: 1) Many British-Americans are unaware of their ancestry because of how long their ancestors have been in the US, and 2) the 2000 census tracked English, Scottish, and Welsh individually instead of combing them leading to the result where many counties were colored as German despite having more total British-Americans. In the 2010 census, you get a much better look at the total amount of Brits and Scandinavians in the US because those categories were consolidated.

for example 1 map that only shows percentage of german ancestry, another one that shows irish, and so on

because with these just being painted with whatever the higher number is, i cant tell if a blue place is really mixed with 11% german being the biggest group, or if its 95% german ancestry

It’s a safe bet than any rural area in the Midwest will have a very high percentage of Germans, but the urban areas are probably only gonna have a plurality of Germans, not a majority.

American is essentially the option that means “I’m white, but I don’t actually know my family’s lineage”. In like 90% of cases it almost assuredly translates to your ancestors having come from the British Isles, but they should still keep the option, just maybe add a disclaimer that says American = you’re probably British, just so people don’t confuse the category as meaning mixed race.

It probably won’t spread as much as you think. There wasn’t that drastic of a change between 2000-2010 (See to ). Most of the proverbial damage from illegal immigration was done in the 70s and 80s.

I think the more interesting thing to watch out for in the 2020 census is if we finally start to see counties with asian or Indian majorities, because that’s really where the vast majority of immigration has been coming from in the last 20 years.

The ones already here are still having a billion kids though.
