In the rare case that you're not a troll, the difference between the flu and Coronavirus is that Coronavirus has a 20% hospitalization rate. There are less than a million beds in the entire continental US and if enough people get infected, we're going to run out of beds really fucking fast. We all saw the death tolls spike in Italy because they literally ran out of hospital space and they had to dump people off of beds who weren't going to make it.

Plus not many people have really dealt with Pandemics before. We've lived in a decent state for most of the last 50 years. And only now after we've blown off Swine Flu and Ebola that something legit serious is hitting the planet.

My mother has a condition that's given her pain since I was young. If she contracts Corona, that might be it. and that scares me more than anything.

Never compare their shitty 3rd world healthcare to literally the best healthcare system in the world. Also China seems to have beaten the virus. And it only took 2 months. Political crap aside, I appreciate hearing some potential good news. a BBC article I read says that while a vaccine is in the works, even if it's made by Christmas, it won't see mass production till probably around this time next year.

I had a long conversation with a buddy at work about this. There's two potential scenarios for a vaccine:

1. Vaccine is successful and Coronavirus is added to the list of diseases like mumps, rubella, etc as "solved" diseases
2. Vaccine is successful but Coronavirus mutates so often that it's the same bullshit we've got to deal with every year like the flu

I hope the moron states like Alabama get swept clean of people that think modern heath care is a step toward Stalinist communism. Christ the senate doesn't move fast enough to make those kind of changes.

No one can say for sure what the death toll will be in 12 months.

If you're sub-50 and are in fairly okay shape, you personally should be fine. As should I. The problem isn't us getting sick, it's a critical mass of people getting sick that crashes the world economy and shuts down infrastructure. My dad is 68 and I literally can't see him for fear of potentially infecting him, and that's just a fact I have to live with until this dies down.

Except I can stay safe from car crashes by paying attention on the road and minimising my driving, and stay safe from domestic violence by not being a woman. Meanwhile I can catch Corona because someone who doesn't even know they're sick yet came to a public function, and even if I survive it I might end up with scarred lung tissue for life.

And you can minimize your risk of corona by taking the proper health precautions. any argument you make about how you can avoid one form of death you can make an argument for avoiding another. it doesnt change the fact that statistically speaking you are still more likely to randomly be bit by a snake and die than you are to randomly catch the coronavirus and die.
